Do's and Don’ts: Before and After Dance Classes

Whether you’re a novice dancer just taking a dance class for fun or an experienced dancer who’s been doing it for years, there are a few dance class rules to follow to make sure you get the most out of every single class.

Things to Avoid Before and After Dance Classes

Those who attend dance classes usually do so after work or school, most commonly during the time they will experience the afternoon slump. In order to combat this routine drop in energy, you’ll need to fuel your body with foods that are guaranteed to get your energy levels back up and prepare you for the dance class ahead. Though it may be tempting after a long hard day, it’s a good idea to avoid high-sugar foods. Food that are high in sugar will provide a temporary sugar high which can be mistaken for energy, but that high will be quickly be followed by a crash. If you load up on sugars before dance class, it can become hard to focus.

Things to Eat and Drink before Dance Class

Having your dancer’s meal plan down pat is key to getting everything you possibly can out of your dance class. However, there’s one thing more important than what you eat before your dance class: water. The most important thing is to stay hydrated throughout the day as well as during your class; this can help your energy levels more than you realize! In addition to drinking a lot of water, you may be wondering what to eat before your dance performance. Carbohydrates are a great food option if you want to keep your energy level consistently high. Eating carbs throughout the day and having a small snack, like pretzels, whole grain crackers, or an apple, just before dance class will help you maintain your energy and perform the best you can.

Things to Eat and Drink after Dance Class

There are certain things you can eat and drink after an intense dance class to replenish your energy and repair your muscles. Eating carbohydrates and protein an hour after can help this process and prevent you from feeling helplessly tired. Healthy post-workout choices include items like peanut butter, cheese, almonds, eggs, bananas, yogurt, or any type of chicken, meat, or fish. Hydration is also important, even when class is over!
